STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY CASE STUDY

MUDLOVE

As Creative Director at MudLOVE, my goal with studio photography was to create a look and feel that mirrored the existing brand lifestyle photography. The CEO of MudLOVE desired a specific way of photographing product which included little to no glare or reflection, and preferred that the product be photographed straight on.

The flexibility of studio photography allowed me to create website product images with a consistent feel as well as play around to create images for social media use.

Challenges

The primary challenge was creating a standard that was versatile and flattered a wide variety of products. As a result, I settled on a relatively flat lighting setup that allowed the product to stand out but with enough shadow and depth so that customers could appreciate the stamped nature of the product.

The tone-tone background (brown and off-white) allowed me to play with textures, shadows, and composition regardless of the subject matter. In some cases, an all-brown background was the solution. In others, like the apparel, a clean background worked best.

I developed the look of the photography to incorporate props that are used in clay production. For example, the chalky blocks are simply dried clay, and the canvas is used to roll clay out into flat tablets.

In many instances, I brought models into the studio to demonstrate the uses of the product. The challenge was to find new ways of exhibiting the product that made it instantly recognizable but still appealed to MudLOVE’s audience.

Lighting Setup

I primarily used a two-light setup. Most photographs were created without modifiers, but in some instances a modifier created water-like or foliage-like shadows or patterns.

Results

During my 6-year tenure at MudLOVE, I created thousands of product images specifically for use on MudLOVE’s website and wholesale catalog.
